Travel the World as a Broke Student

A lot of my friends and also a few readers asked me how I was able to travel while I was still in school or doing my apprenticeship. It’s easier than you might think and you don’t have to choose between one or the other if you want to make it work.

But you should keep in mind that while I was doing my apprenticeship, I never traveled longer than one month at a time. I have nothing like a nomadic lifestyle or anything close to it. I just did a few trips while I still lived at home.

Get a Job

If you are in school and you want to keep it this way, this is inevitable. While traveling can be cheap, I haven’t yet found a way to travel completely free. If you have, please contact me. During my apprenticeship I went to school while also working. This was a great combination because I could save the money I earned while working for my trips. I saved almost every dime I earned towards my travel goals.
If you are a full-time student there are still plenty of options to earn some cash. You could work as a waiter on the weekends or give private lessons to younger students. I am sure you will come up with an idea that suits you.

Don’t Waste Money

If you earn very little money it is a good idea to not throw it out of the windows for useless stuff. If you want to make your travel dreams become reality, maybe you should cut back on drinking, on smoking or on going out. Cook for yourself instead of going out. There are tons of ways you can save money very easily by slightly changing your attitude and lifestyle.
If you want to know more about how to save the money you already earn, I have an article dedicated to that subject. You can find it here.

Study Abroad

Why not combine your love for traveling with your education? There are a lot different programs you can study abroad. You could learn a new language or get your university degree in a different country. Many universities all over the planet offer exchange programs.

The possibilities are almost endless. You can either combine traveling with your education or save your money during school for your epic adventure. The choice is yours.
